Digital Picture Frames For the Hobby Photographer

By Jeffrey Oliver

Are you into hobby photography? I fancy myself a bit of a photographer, though I'm definitely in the "hobby" category. Sometimes when I talk to a friend of mine who is a professional photographer, I'm reminded that my camera only costs hundreds, while his costs thousands! But the whole point of hobby photography is to have fun with what you're doing. One of the best ways to do that is to find creative ways to share your photos with others.

Photo Sharing Online There are many different ways to share your photos online with friends, from Facebook to Flickr, and everything in between. This is of course a great way for people to stay up to date on your best work or latest escapades, however this form of photo sharing typically is locked in cyberspace.

Digital Picture Frames Digital frames are great news for hobby photographers, because they present an inexpensive way to display our best work to our friends, as they are over visiting! Prior to getting a digital picture frame, every few months I would go through my digital photos and try to pick out the absolute best ones, the ones that I would like to see on my wall. Then I would further narrow this down to a small handful that I could actually afford to print. Once these make it onto the wall, I would usually get admiring comments from my guests, then they would fade into the scenery as you quickly get used to them.

With a digital picture frame, it is so easy to keep it filled with fresh photos of your latest work. Every time people come over they are treated to a fresh taste of your photographic and artistic skill.

Merging Online Sharing With Digital Frames Some digital picture frames are now available with wireless functions. These can be integrated with online photo sharing sites, so that now you can share all your photos with a few clicks! For instance, the Digital Spectrum MF8115 is a great 15" wireless photo frame that works off your existing wireless home network. You can set it up so that when you update your Flickr account, the digital frame is automatically updated as well!

Combining a wireless digital frame with an online photo sharing account is truly the most efficient way for a hobby photographer to share their work with their friends and colleagues.

Don't even think of buying a digital picture frame until you've read the DigitalFrameGuy.com's free Buyer's Guide to Digital Picture Frames!

Foam Board Poster Frame Project: Fun-Easy-Inexpensive

By Fran Matthews

When I found an adorable Barbie poster for my daughter's bedroom, I thought it would be easy to find the perfect poster frame for it. Once I started looking, however, I could not find one to suit my requirements. First of all, it had to be cute and colorful. A basic black poster frame just would not be satisfactory. Second, it had to be safe for young children. If the frame were to fall, it could not be heavy or breakable. Third, the poster frame needed to be inexpensive.

With no luck in finding a suitable poster frame, I decided to look into making one myself. Off to the craft store I went, where I soon noticed that foam board is a popular material. The product is very lightweight, colorful, and affordable. Foam board was the perfect choice. I let my creative spirit take over, and I was very impressed with the final product. It's cute, colorful, safe, and inexpensive, just like I was hoping. The total cost of the materials was about $10, not including the poster. Here's how you can make one, too:

Materials:

  • Poster
  • One sheet yellow foam board, 20 inches x 30 inches
  • Two sheets standard white poster board, 22 inches x 28 inches each
  • Foam sparkle flower stickers
  • Two ribbons, each 28 inches long
  • X-Acto knife
  • Tape measure
  • Tape

Directions:

Tape the 2 sheets of white poster board together, creating a larger, single poster board that is 28 inches x 44 inches.

Tape your poster of choice onto the poster board that has been taped together. Try to center it evenly in the middle, equidistant from all 4 sides. The Barbie poster I used for this project measures 22 inches x 34 inches, but you can always adapt the size of your frame to accommodate a poster with different dimensions.

Cut the yellow foam board into pieces to fit the size needed to frame your poster. Suggestion: Add an extra ½ inch to the top and bottom pieces and ¼ inch to the width of each side piece to avoid unwanted space between the poster and the frame. Because of the dimensions of the yellow foam board, I had to piece together the sides of my frame. The actual dimensions of the pieces I cut for the frame were:2 sections of yellow foam board: 28 inches x 5 inches2 sections of yellow foam board: 30 inches x 3 ¼ inches2 sections of yellow foam board: 4 inches x 3 ¼ inches

Tape the yellow foam board frame pieces together.

Using tape between the two, attach the frame to the poster board, showcasing your poster.
Tape ribbons to the reverse side of the frame. Try to center them about 8 inches apart equidistant from the center point at the top.

Tie the ribbons into a bow.

Embellish the frame using the foam sparkle flower stickers. Find the perfect place on the wall and hang it up!

Summary:

At first, I was discouraged because I could not find a suitable frame for my daughter's poster. Using foam board and a little creativity, I made a lightweight, colorful, and inexpensive poster frame that she will enjoy.

Framed Wall Art - Preserve In Wood Or Metal

By Cassaundra Flores

Framed wall art is where the poster or painting has been put in a nice frame so that it can be hung on the walls. These are a common sight in most homes and offices, the only difference would be the content of the framed wall art. Some might prefer having motivational quotes or pictures, while others would enjoy having a picture of their loved ones or of a personality they admire or look up to. These posters can make a whole lot of difference to the ambiance of the room, adding class and reflecting the personality of the home owners or the office holder. Posters are basically paper based prints of people or objects that are designed so they can be fixed on the wall or any vertical platform. There are some people who display pictures taken with famous celebrities on their walls to show off their accomplishments. This adds value when a prospective client or customer walks into the room.

In case of professionals, they might at times have their degree and other accolades framed and on the wall. In a dentists office for example, we might find wall art of his degree, certificate obtained for extraordinary achievements and others given by prestigious organizations. All this gives the person visiting him a reassurance of his qualifications and ability to treat them. In a home however they are likely to have pictures or portraits of family members or special occasions. Or of people they care about but who have passed away, these are a way of remembering them and keeping them as part of daily lives.

Pictures by themselves need a way to be displayed, so people pick up pretty photo frames to put them in and place them in places where they will notice them. Some have bedside tables filled with pictures of their children or parents, or they could have a collection of framed pictures on the mantle.

Children and men who enjoy sports have been known to have pictures and posters of their favorite sports players or of a particular incident that appeared in the papers. And if a member of the family was recognized and given an award or prize, those pictures would also be framed and put up on the walls. An art enthusiast might have wall art of famous paintings, some could be original while others would be replicated versions of the same. Some vintage posters would also find their place amongst the other valuable framed wall art pieces.

Similarly, for movie lovers, they are likely to collect classic posters, and to preserve them will frame them and put them up in their room. Framed wall art is a beautiful way of preserving precious moments or displaying photos of loved ones or people who matter the most around the room where one spends most of their time in. so, next time you walk into a house, don't be surprised to see a framed art of Luciano Pavarotti, the world wide renowned opera singer.

Poster Frames

By Josh Riverside

Most posters do not come with frames because, originally, posters were meant to be posted over short periods. After they have served their purpose of informing their target audiences, they are removed to give way to others that need the same prime spot to grab attention. Some may have frames. Usually though, the frames are of a thin, plastic material. This is because they are meant to be displayed over a certain period or duration of the marketing campaign only. The frames are so simple so as not to distract the attention of the target audience. Certain industries however frame their posters to suit their needs best.

Some restaurants, record stores, and theatres frame old movie and record posters on their walls and lobbies. But because poster memorabilia are basically considered pop culture items and not high art, owners do not really invest much in their preservation. They still use simple, ordinary poster frames.

Corporate posters are pretty much framed the same way. But for special occasions, such as inaugurations and anniversaries, event posters that also serve as memorabilia are framed in more special materials. They are also framed with large margins on all sides to allow special people or all attendees of the event to sign their names and write messages. This is also done in wedding, anniversary, and birthday photos.

Policies, visions, and mission statements of corporations are often printed on poster sized paper and simply framed. This is to drive the message that although the statements are hung on walls, they are not there for decorous purposes. They are there as living statements to be followed and to be given much thought.

Depending on the gravity of the messages carried by posters, the frames must always compliment the poster. Posters made to advertise to kids may have a more dynamic, fun, and interesting frame. Those that carry very formal messages such as guidelines and directions would need to be placed in frames of simple texture, color, and plain design to keep the interest of the reader on what the poster is trying to say.
