Poster Frames

By Josh Riverside

Most posters do not come with frames because, originally, posters were meant to be posted over short periods. After they have served their purpose of informing their target audiences, they are removed to give way to others that need the same prime spot to grab attention. Some may have frames. Usually though, the frames are of a thin, plastic material. This is because they are meant to be displayed over a certain period or duration of the marketing campaign only. The frames are so simple so as not to distract the attention of the target audience. Certain industries however frame their posters to suit their needs best.

Some restaurants, record stores, and theatres frame old movie and record posters on their walls and lobbies. But because poster memorabilia are basically considered pop culture items and not high art, owners do not really invest much in their preservation. They still use simple, ordinary poster frames.

Corporate posters are pretty much framed the same way. But for special occasions, such as inaugurations and anniversaries, event posters that also serve as memorabilia are framed in more special materials. They are also framed with large margins on all sides to allow special people or all attendees of the event to sign their names and write messages. This is also done in wedding, anniversary, and birthday photos.

Policies, visions, and mission statements of corporations are often printed on poster sized paper and simply framed. This is to drive the message that although the statements are hung on walls, they are not there for decorous purposes. They are there as living statements to be followed and to be given much thought.

Depending on the gravity of the messages carried by posters, the frames must always compliment the poster. Posters made to advertise to kids may have a more dynamic, fun, and interesting frame. Those that carry very formal messages such as guidelines and directions would need to be placed in frames of simple texture, color, and plain design to keep the interest of the reader on what the poster is trying to say.
