Here's an interesting decorating idea for anyone who loves doing things themselves. This will be especially fun if you like crafts too: Make a poster collage.
Now the first step in this project would be to pick out a wall for the collage display. This will work beautifully on larger walls, but smaller arrangements can be made too.
Step two is to buy a large, mural or wall sized poster. How large of a poster you buy will depend on the size of the wall you plan to work with. I think the biggest impact will be made with at least a three foot by four foot poster or wall space.
The type of poster you choose is up to you. It can be a generic nature scene with trees, a mountain and lake. Or try a pretty garden scene with a bench and arbor. If your room is done is a more modern style, trying getting an abstract poster with bright, vibrant colors instead.
Step three is to buy nine to twelve picture frames. You can buy the clear acrylic kind without actual frames around them, or go with matching standard frames in any style you'd like. You'll end up with entirely different looks just by the type of frames you choose too, so you might consider buying more than one set, so they can be changed at various times of the year.
Step four is to cut up the poster. Yes that new poster you just bought. Cut it into equal pieces: Three across and four down, four across and five down, or whatever combination fits with the number of picture frames you've purchased, as well as what size those frames are.
An 8x10 frame for instance, would require each piece of your poster to be 8 inches wide by 10 inches high. So if your poster is 24 inches wide, you'd cut it into three equal pieces. If you've purchased a larger poster though, say 40 inches wide, and you're using the 8x10 picture frames, then you'll cut the width of the poster into 5 equal pieces.
If the poster you chose does not break down into pieces evenly with the picture frame sizes you bought, there are two things you can do: Cut them to be displayed sideways, or cut off the extra from the outside of the poster before beginning.
What I mean by cutting sideways, is to cut the poster into pieces that will fit into the frames in horizontal format. Instead of 8 inches wide, you'd make the poster pieces 10 inches wide, and 8 inches high. Then when you hang your frames, you'll hang them in horizontal format instead of standard portrait style.
If you're still not able to fit the pieces into the frames this way, then trim off the extra from one or both sides of the poster before cutting it into pieces. If you plan to cut the poster three pieces wide at 10 inches each, then you only have room for 30 inches total. If the poster is 32 inches wide, you'll simply cut off two inches from one side, or one inch from each.
Once you've cut the poster into the various pieces, then you simply put each peice into a picture frame. Arrange the frames back into the full sized picture, then hang them on the wall in order. The end result will be a much more elegant, sophisticated and artistic wall decoration than hanging a regular poster on the wall in full.
